Studying Teacher Education at FAU

Since Germany has a federal education system, school systems and teacher education differs between the states in Germany. Teacher education at FAU is designed for the Bavarian school system including primary schools, middle schools, secondary modern schools, high schools, vocational schools and special-needs schools. FAU is one of the biggest institutions for teacher education in Bavaria and offers a wide range of subjects and teaching degree programs for different school types. Moreover, there are additional subjects such as German as a second language, performing arts, Islamic education, philosophy and ethics and media pedagogy. FAU offers teaching degree programs for students who want to become teachers and further teaching-related study programs leading to a Bachelor of Arts and Science or Master of Education for professions outside of schools.

Teaching degree programs at FAU include different curricular elements: subject-related studies, subject-related didactics, educational science, a free area (where students can chose teaching-related courses), internships and an admissions thesis. The teaching degree programs for primary schools and middles schools have social sciences as an additional curricular element. After successful completion of the teaching degree program, students take the state examination. Passing the state examination, students qualify for the second phase of teacher education, which includes a teaching traineeship and a second state examination. After successful completion of the second phase of teacher education, they are qualified teachers. The third and last phase of teacher education includes continuous professional development.
